All saucer magnolias make great lawn trees as well. You will first see 'Betty' wake up around mid to late April, as the flower buds begin to emerge just before the foliage. The large sized blossoms are red-purple on the outside and white on the inside up to 8 inches across.
This variety of saucer magnolia only grows to about 15 feet tall, big enough to make quite a colorful statement, yet small enough to fit in side yards or large planter beds. This variety has a tendency to be more tree like.
Use the deciduous magnolias for an early splash of spring time color, or on your property line for a large colorful hedge or privacy screen.
Plant magnolia Betty in full sun in a moisture retentive acidic soil. Hardy to USDA 5 to 6 and all higher zones.
